Fossils from East Wemyss are common. There is plenty of plant remains to be found and the sea is often washing fresh fossiliferious shale from the cliffs.

East Wemyss is suitable for children but care must be taken on the building rubble including bricks that are coming from the first part of the cliff face.

East Wemyss has excellent access to the beach, you don't have to walk far and there is a car park.

Foreshore, Cliff

Most fossils are found within shale on the foreshore, you will need a chisel pick to split the shale apart.

This is an excellent location for plant remains, but you could also try Little Haven, Nelton Haven in wales, Writhlington and Radstock in Avon or Whitehaven in Cumbria, Offerton in Cheshire, Besom Hill in Lancashire or New Hay Quarry in Lancashire which is very similar or try Jurassic plant remains from Yorkshire, Scalby Ness, Hayburn Wyke, Filey, Cloughton Wyke and Gristhorpe Bay. In Scotland, you can also try Joppa Shore, Anstruther , or Crail.

Microfossils are much easier to collect because they are so small that the vast majority of collections only concentrate on large finds. These small finds can simply be found by taking small samples of sands, crags, clays and soft rocks and examining them under a microscope.
